Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation (National Curriculum, 2013).

 St Paul's Art Rationale

At St Paul’s, we are artists! We encourage our children to develop a love of art and design which stimulates creativity and imagination through the use of a wide range of materials. We want them to know no boundaries to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, set designers or photographers! We want them to express themselves, regardless of their competence in verbal and written communication, knowing that they can take risks and explore all mediums.

The art and design curriculum has been carefully structured so that our children have the opportunity to achieve their full artistic potential through traditional and experimental work, small and large scale experiences and two dimensional and three dimensional work. We want our children to remember their art and design experiences, to cherish the knowledge they acquire and embrace the opportunities they have to develop it. Bringing art and design alive is important as it gives effective cross-curricular links, adding to children’s experiences and depth of understanding in other areas of their learning, from creating their own artwork and artefacts to appreciating the artwork of others, including local artists. Opportunity will be provided to enable children to work independently or within groups to share ideas and learn from each other. This also allows time for quiet reflective work as well as active, dynamic work.

We enrich their time in our school with memorable, unforgettable experiences and provide opportunities which are inspiring, creative and develop a passion for life
